Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare felicitated Rinku Kumari Thakur, who fought her battle against Child Marriage. Rinku was brave enough to go against her parents and societal norms of child marriage in her community. Child marriage violates girls’ rights to health, education and opportunity. It is one of the most harmful practices embedded structurally and culturally in Nepalese society, especially in the Rural areas.
Even in her worst moment , Rinku managed to lodge a complaint to the police. Maiti Nepal in coordination with the police rescued Rinku from all the physical torture she was going through. Maiti Nepal provided her with immediate shelter and all the basic facilities. Currently, she still resides in the warm hospitable environment of Maiti Nepal. Maiti Nepal wants to make Rinku an ambassador in the fight against this harmful practice of child marraige.
Rinku was awarded with a letter of appreciation and cash prize of 10,000 rupees by honorable Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal Mr. CP Mainali.
