
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that strict action will be taken against those involved in human trafficking. Addressing the interactive program on “My Party’s Commitment Against Human Trafficking’ organized in the context of the 16th National Day Against Human Trafficking, he said that human trafficking is a stigma and whoever is involved in it will be brought to justice.
Prime Minister Deuba said that the government is ready to amend the law if necessary to bring those involved in heinous crimes like human trafficking to justice. He also instructed the law enforcement agencies to control such incidents and bring those involved in the crime to justice.
Referring to the fact that the Nepalese government has made an international commitment against human trafficking, he said that various social and non-governmental organizations, human rights-related associations and organizations should unite with the government for control.
Stating that more women and children have been victims of human trafficking in Nepal recently, he said that the work done by Maiti Nepal and other social organizations to rescue those who have been trafficked and bring them safely to Nepal is commendable.
The government also expressed its commitment to make necessary arrangements for the rehabilitation and livelihood of the women and girls rescued from trafficking in the society. In the seminar organized under the chairmanship of Anuradha Koirala, the founder of Maiti Nepal, Executive Director Vishwaram Khadka presented statistics on human trafficking. He said that a large number of people are being trafficked under the cover of visit visas and urged the Nepalese government and Prime Minister Deuba to control it.
Rashtriya Jan Morcha President Chitra Bahadur KC expressed the view that the human trafficking that is happening openly from Nepal is a matter of shame for the state. Leader of Nepali Congress Arjun Narsingh KC, leader of Rashtriya Prajatantra Party Anjana Shah, leader of Janata Samajwadi Party Rekha Yadav, leader of Democratic Samajwadi Party Pushpa Thakur expressed their commitment against human trafficking.
According to statistics presented by Maiti Nepal, 15,000 women, 15,000 men and 5,000 children are victims of trafficking from Nepal every year. Out of which, the rescue of 3,000 people has been taking place under the leadership of Maiti Nepal.
It has been found that girls with weak economic conditions and deprived of educational opportunities are subjected to temptation and forced trafficking and sexual exploitation while working in cafeterias, dance bars, restaurants and massage centers.
According to a statistic presented by the United Nations, 100 million women, children and men are trafficked from around the world every year. From this, it has been found that the gangs involved in human trafficking have a business of three trillion dollars.
Human trafficking and prevention is becoming a challenge due to the fact that the gangs have economic influence and collusion with the regulatory agencies of the state. It has been found that victims change their statements due to legal inadequacy and the complexity and fear of gathering evidence to prosecute those involved in human trafficking. Recently, it has been found that a large number of Nepali youths are being trafficked to the Gulf countries using fake documents under the cover of visit visas from Nepal.
Nepal Police’s Central Investigation Bureau CIB and Human Trafficking Bureau are conducting separate investigations after suspecting that an organized gang of human traffickers is active in this and the collusion of the airport staff.
