MAITI NEPAL

Empowering Survivors of Internal Trafficking Through Skill Development Training

Project Duration: June 2025 to May 2026

Donor: Vicente Ferrer Stiftung, Wollankstraße, Berlin

Geographical Coverage: Kathmandu

Introduction

Maiti Nepal launched the project “Empowering Survivors of Internal Trafficking through Skill Development Training” in Gaushala, Kathmandu. The initiative focuses on equipping survivors with practical and market-driven vocational skills, including beads crafting, pickle making, and sewing & tailoring. By addressing the root causes of vulnerability such as poverty, lack of education, and economic dependence, the project works to reduce survivors’ risks of re-exploitation while building pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

Beyond vocational training, the project emphasizes survivor-led empowerment, where trained survivors take on the role of trainers, fostering peer learning and creating a ripple effect of empowerment. Reintegration into communities is also a core aspect, ensuring that survivors not only gain economic independence but also rebuild social networks and regain dignity. This integrated approach directly contributes to Nepal’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5 on Gender Equality, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities), making survivors active contributors to society.

Major Objectives:

  • Operate a vocational skill development program at Mati Nepal Workshop in Gaushala, Kathmandu, to provide survivors of internal trafficking with training in beads crafting, pickle making, and sewing & tailoring.
  • Empower vulnerable girls and women by enabling survivor-trainers to lead sessions, fostering peer-to-peer support, financial stability, and role modeling.
  • Facilitate positive community reintegration of survivors by linking skill training to sustainable livelihood opportunities, thereby reducing stigma and strengthening resilience.
