MAITI NEPAL

A Path to Safety: Rescue and Support in Kathmandu

Name has been changed to protect identity.

Ramita (name changed) is a young girl from rural Nepal who grew up in a financially struggling household. Due to economic hardship, she was unable to continue her education beyond Grade 8. She later worked in domestic employment to support her family, sending most of her limited earnings home.

In search of better opportunities, Ramita travelled to Kathmandu with hopes of earning a stable income. Through informal contacts, she was introduced to different workplaces, including factory work and later employment in the spa sector where she was promised a monthly salary and commission-based income.

Over time, she was pressured into engaging in unwanted and exploitative activities by clients in the workplace. Fear of losing her job and lack of safe alternatives left her in a coercive situation where she felt unable to refuse or seek help.

Ramita’s situation came to the attention of Maiti Nepal through its ongoing outreach and monitoring efforts. During the process, concerns emerged that she was a minor and may have been facing coercion and exploitation. Following verification of the situation, Maiti Nepal coordinated with the police, who conducted a raid operation at the spa.

Ramita was subsequently rescued on April 28, 2026 and placed under the care and protection of Maiti Nepal. She received immediate shelter, counseling, and psychosocial support in a safe environment.

Through continued support and legal orientation, Ramita came to understand her experience as exploitation under coercion. She has since filed a case against the perpetrator and legal proceedings are ongoing. Maiti Nepal continues to provide her with protection, psychosocial care, and legal support. She is currently safe under institutional care and is receiving support focused on recovery, stability, and rebuilding her future.
