MAITI NEPAL

Combating Cross-Border Human Trafficking

On 9th December 2024, a crucial workshop addressing cross-border human trafficking and sexual exploitation was held in Rupandehi. The event brought together stakeholders from India and Nepal to discuss challenges and forge collaborative solutions to combat trafficking effectively.

Basudev Ghimire, Chief District Officer (CDO) of Rupandehi, chaired the program, with Umakanta Chapai, Chairperson of the District Coordination Committee (DCC), and Phanendra Prasad Sharma, Mayor of Sainamaina Municipality, as chief guests. Representatives from both nations participated alongside the Executive Director of Maiti Nepal, who presented on “Expediting Cross-Border Rescue and Repatriation and Promoting Safe Migration to Prevent Trafficking.”

Key sessions addressed trafficking patterns and routes, legislation and enforcement, survivor rehabilitation, and the role of communities in prevention. A major outcome was the formation of INJAF (Indo-Nepal Joint Action Forum), which committed to a follow-up meeting within a week to strengthen cross-border initiatives.

Highlights included CDO Ghimire emphasizing the evolving methods of trafficking and the need for a shared database, Umakanta Chapai pledging local government support, and Phanendra Sharma highlighting the trafficking of boys and India’s role as a transit hub. The insights shared, including Maiti Nepal’s focus on safe migration, marked a significant step in addressing these challenges holistically.

This workshop underscored the importance of collaboration in building resilience against human trafficking and promoting a safer future for vulnerable communities.
