Maiti Nepal has launched a nationwide signature campaign to address the urgent need for a clear and comprehensive repatriation procedure. Despite the provisions in the Human Trafficking and Transportation (Control) Act, 2064(2008), which mandate the rescue and repatriation of victims stranded abroad with their consent, the absence of a formal repatriation procedure has severely limited the scope and effectiveness of such efforts. At present, rescue and rehabilitation initiatives are undertaken primarily by a few organizations, leaving many victims without the necessary support to return home safely.
To fill this critical gap, Maiti Nepal has initiated a signature campaign throughout the 16 Days activism against gender-based violence (25th November- 10th December 2024) to advocate for the signing of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at streamlining the rescue, repatriation, and social rehabilitation of trafficking victims. These SOPs, if implemented, will ensure a systematic and government-led approach to the rescue and reintegration of affected individuals, fostering a more coordinated and sustainable response to human trafficking.
On the occasion of International Migrant’s Day on 18th December 2024, Maiti Nepal submitted a memorandum through various District Administration Offices within the districts of Maiti Nepal’s branch offices in a bold move to press the government for action. The memorandum calls for the immediate advancement of the repatriation procedure’s implementation, emphasizing the importance of a victim-centered and consent-based approach. This initiative signifies a crucial step toward ensuring that no victim of trafficking is left behind, highlighting the need for collective efforts to address this pressing issue.
Through this campaign, Maiti Nepal continues to lead the fight against human trafficking, urging policymakers, stakeholders, and the public to support the establishment of a structured and humane repatriation process.
