National Consultation on Access to Justice for Survivors of Human Trafficking

In collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General, Maiti Nepal successfully hosted a National Level Consultation on Access to Justice for Survivors of Human Trafficking on February 14-15, 2025, in Kathmandu. The event, chaired by Maiti Nepal Founder/Chairperson Ms. Anuradha Koirala, brought together key stakeholders, with Hon. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak as the Chief Guest and Special Guests Lokraj Parajuli (Attorney General’s Office) and IGP Basant Raj Kunwar (Nepal Police Chief). In his welcome remarks, Achyut Kumar Nepal, Deputy Director of Maiti Nepal, emphasized the consultation’s objective—strengthening legal frameworks, ensuring survivor-centered justice, and enhancing stakeholder collaboration.

The consultation featured expert presentations and engaging discussions on crucial aspects of human trafficking cases. DSP Gyan Bahadur Bista (Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau) shared insights on victim-centered and effective investigations, addressing key challenges in law enforcement. Mina Poudel (Under Secretary, Ministry of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens) highlighted strategies for the rescue, repatriation, and reintegration of survivors. Surya Raj Dahal (Deputy Attorney, Attorney General’s Office) discussed legal barriers to justice, while Hon. Judge Tek Narayan Kunwar (Chairperson, Special Court) shed light on compensation mechanisms for trafficking survivors.

Interactive thematic group discussions provided a platform for meaningful engagement, focusing on:

🔹 Compensation for Survivors – Addressing gaps in policy implementation.

🔹 Prosecution & Legal Access – Identifying barriers and strategies for justice.

🔹 Rescue, Repatriation & Reintegration – Reviewing policies and challenges in survivor rehabilitation.

The consultation underscored the need for stronger collaboration among law enforcement, prosecutors, the judiciary, and civil society to enhance justice delivery and survivor support. The insights gained will contribute to strengthening legal frameworks, ensuring victim protection, and fostering coordinated efforts in the fight against human trafficking.
