On December 9, 2024, Maiti Nepal, in collaboration with the Community Police, conducted an orientation program for transportation workers at Gongabu Buspark. The event was part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and focused on empowering drivers and assistant drivers with knowledge to help combat human trafficking.
The session highlighted the importance of recognizing suspicious traveler behavior and understanding how trafficking occurs during journeys within Nepal. To provide deeper insights, two short films were screened, shedding light on the tactics used in human trafficking and the devastating effects of domestic violence.
Discussions during the program underscored the crucial role transportation workers play as the first witnesses to potential trafficking activities. While organizations like Maiti Nepal and the police work tirelessly, preventing trafficking requires collective responsibility from all members of society.
Key recommendations from the session included the need to report suspicious activities to the police immediately, conduct proper document checks during ticketing, and remain vigilant. This is especially important in a context where economic struggles make many individuals vulnerable to exploitation. In unity, transportation workers and communities can contribute to ensuring safer journeys and protecting lives.
