Empowering Change: Maiti Nepal’s Cross-Border Workshop Against Human Trafficking
On December 28, 2023, Maiti Nepal took a pivotal step in the fight against human trafficking by hosting a Cross-Border Workshop. With the primary objectives of developing effective mechanisms to prevent cross-border trafficking and establishing fast-track rescue and repatriation processes for victims, the workshop convened esteemed experts and advocates.
Distinguished speakers included Mr. S.K.Gulia, a Former ACP, Crime Branch, Delhi; Mr. Varun Pathak, Former Chairperson, CWC Mayur Vihar, Delhi; Mr. Shamsher Singh, Delhi Social Activist; and Dr. Mansi Jayanta, Child Development Officer, CARITAS, Calcutta.
Indian Delegates delivered impactful presentations on “Preventing Children/Women from being trafficked at Border Areas” and bilateral coordination to prevent human trafficking. The discussions delved into “Rescue and Repatriation Mechanisms from Nepal to India” and “Ways to Promote Safe Migration to Combat Human Trafficking.”
Maiti Nepal’s Executive Director, Mr. Bishworam Khadka, addressed cross-border trafficking with a comprehensive presentation, emphasizing the urgency of collaborative efforts.
Special guests Ms. Sita Karki, DCC Vice Chairperson, Mr. Prashant Bista, Mayor of Nepalgunj, including all the participants, led discussions on the effect of unsafe migration and human trafficking. Key topics included advocacy mechanisms, the changing dimension of human trafficking, preventive measures in the coming years, and joint efforts to address human trafficking in the Nepal-India border. The spotlight was on the crucial rescue and repatriation of children and women from both India and Nepal.
