Representatives from Maiti Nepal participated in the International Summit on Combating Human Trafficking: Source to Destination, held in Darjeeling, India, on 25–26 April 2026. The summit brought together government representatives, civil society organizations, and anti-trafficking stakeholders from Nepal and India to strengthen cross-border cooperation in preventing and responding to human trafficking.
The discussions focused on enhancing coordination between source and destination areas, improving rescue and referral mechanisms, and strengthening protection measures for women and children at risk in border communities. Participants also explored strategies to improve information sharing and collaborative responses to trafficking cases that cross national borders.
During the summit, Maiti Nepal shared its experience in border surveillance, victim protection, and cross-border coordination, highlighting the role of the Inter-Border Core Committee in fostering cooperation between stakeholders in Nepal and India. Maiti Nepal currently operates 11 transit homes along key border points, providing immediate support to vulnerable women and children while helping prevent cross-border trafficking.
The organization’s prevention and surveillance efforts continue to play a critical role in safeguarding at-risk populations. In 2025 alone, Maiti Nepal intercepted 1,703 individuals at border points in Koshi Province and a total of 5,138 individuals across Nepal through its border monitoring and prevention initiatives.
Maiti Nepal also highlighted its ongoing collaboration with local organizations and government agencies on both sides of the border through workshops, joint discussions, and coordinated interventions. Most recently, in partnership with the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Maiti Nepal organized a cross-border workshop on 18–19 December 2025, bringing together stakeholders and government representatives from Nepal, Bihar, and West Bengal to strengthen regional cooperation against human trafficking.
Maiti Nepal remains committed to working with partners across borders to enhance prevention efforts, improve protection mechanisms, and ensure a coordinated response to human trafficking, helping create safer communities for women and children throughout the region.
